Budapest shines at its brightest during the summer months, its castles glisten in the sunlight and the Danube is speckled with boats. It’s the best time of year; it’s finally warm enough to be outdoors and judging by their events-packed summer calendar, the city is poised and ready to kick things up a notch.
We figured that it might be handy to know what’s happening when, just in case you might want to plan your travels around any of these events. Here are our favourites.
Buda Castle Beer Festival
2 – 5 June
One of the city’s most iconic buildings transforms into an artisanal beer festival for four magical days every summer in Budapest. The hilltop Buda Castle becomes home to around 200 national and international beers – keep an eye out for traditional speciality Korty if you’re an enthusiast on the prowl for something typically local. Live music, along with the stunning courtyard and terrace surroundings, make this festival definitely one worth visiting.
Budapest Summer Festival
10 june – 31 August
Highlighting the season in all its glory, the Budapest Summer Festival spans across a three-month period, and includes a series of concerts, musicals and festivals. Whether you’re in the mood for an opera by Verdi, or perhaps a circus performance, you might just happen to come across one at one of the three main stages located across the city. We’ve included a link to their calendar in the title above.
18 – 26 June
Now in its 21st year, the Danube Carnival has become one of the most important events in Budapest’s cultural calendar. Combining the modern dance industry with Hungarian folk culture, the festival includes dance shows, gala evenings, as well as concerts held in various locations across the capital celebrating both traditional folk, as well as international performances.
Vajdahunyad Castle Summer Music Festival
4 July – 4 August
There has never been a better time to head out on a romantic date, or take some time off to enjoy classical music than during this year’s Vajdahunyad Castle Summer Music Festival. Expect a variety of concerts ranging from classical music to traditional klezmer, set against the impressive backdrop of the Vajdahunyad Castle.
Red Bull Air Race, Budapest
16 – 17 July
Whether you’re a thrill seeker, an adrenalin junky, or an adventure enthusiast, the Red Bull Air Race Budapest showcases a series of breath taking aerial stunts and competitions between some of the world’s best light plane pilots. Find a spot along the riverbank and watch these planes challenge expectations right above the Danube and the city skyline.
Formula One,Hungarian Grand Prix, Budapest
22 – 24 July
Need for speed? What better opportunity than this year’s largest racing event in Hungary; the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix, which marks the 11th stop on the 2016 racing calendar. The Mogyoród race is a highly anticipated one, and just in case you were wondering; we’re talking about sprawling country views, hot weather, a demanding track and a captivating experience.
10 – 17 August
Every year, the Sziget Festival takes over the northern Budapest island of Óbudai and offers an exciting week of live music and entertainment. The headline is international, well rounded and includes the likes of Rhianna, David Guetta, Sia Kaiser Chiefs and Muse, amongst others. Three-day passes and single entry tickets are both available.
